2012: Resolution Solutions – Part 2

In part one of Resolution Solutions we looked at strategies to help choleric and melancholy personalities approach self improvement for 2012. In part two I’ll provide helpful hints for the laid-back phlegmatic and the easily distracted sanguine.

Encouragement for the Laid Back and Easily Distracted

If you are either the phlegmatic or sanguine resolutions makers, I feel your pain. Being a blend of BOTH these non-task oriented personalities, resolutions used to make me break out in a cold sweat. A sweat from the fount of failure!

Sanguine people start out with the best-laid plans, but find it hard to follow through. Either something more fun comes along and captures this person’s attention. Sanguines are, after all, the original fun-time machines. If it isn’t fun that waylays their resolutions, it’s the fact they get distracted and forget. My best resolution solution for you sanguine self-improvement seekers is to WRITE your goals and tape them to your bathroom mirror to serve as a daily reminder. Another great strategy is to find another sanguine with the same goals to partner with. You are much more likely to follow through if you have someone around to keep it fun . . . and hold you accountable.

One other thing sanguine people need to be careful of is setting TOO many goals. It is hard for you fun-loving personalities to say no to anything and you often go overboard. As hard as it may be, learn to not take on too much. You’ll find life is more fun when you are not overwhelmed.

For the phlegmatic personality, well, I offer this encouragement: YOU CAN DO THIS! Really, you can! That is, IF you stay engaged. You phlegmatic people may not know this about yourselves, but you tend to be the most reliable of all the four personality types. You have the ability to follow through if you’ll just stay the course. Those who know you well know they can rely on you.

You may not get things done in as flashy a manner as sanguine personalities, as quickly as the cholerics around you, or as meticulously as the world’s melancholies, but you do what you commit yourself to. However, what often hinders phlegmatic personalities is getting discouraged. Believe, I know! Sometimes we give up because we don’t progress as quickly as others. Other times, we get tired of people nagging us because we don’t have the same approach as they do.

A good resolution solution for phlegmatic personalities is understanding that we tend do things in our own time, in our own way. If this describes you, don’t let others mess with your mind when it comes to your goals. One other strategy I highly recommend (because it works for me) is to set realistic time frames. Phlegmatic people work slower than the other personalities and that is totally okay.

I wish all the personalities everywhere a wonderful and prosperous New Year. I hope my resolution solutions will help you accomplish your goals and dream for 2012.

I agree with your post but in this fast paced world it’s hard for me to accept not having some of the strengths of the other temperments.
