Word for Today – Amos 7:8

A Plumb Line

Amos 7 started out with God refraining from judgements of locusts and fire on the people of Israel. However, after Amos and God’s discussion of judgement God starts talking tools:

“See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by’ (Amos 7:8 NRSV).

A plumb line is used to ensure the straightness of line such as a wall, an edge, etc. Several years ago I wall papered my kitchen. I was a little worried about the straightness of my project since I have a tendency to hang things cock-eyed. Everything I put up tilts a tad to the right. Thankfully my wallpaper-hanging kit included a plumb line that help me hang the paper straight and avoid seasickness in my kitchen.

Israel was in desperate need of a plumb line because their lives became cock-eyed as a nation. The plumb line was God’s provision for his people; a spiritual tool to show them how crooked they had become as a result of their individual and corporate sin.

I’ve talked much of the similarities of the United States and the content of Amos, and I don’t want to beleaguer the point in another post. But, if you have not read my previous Amos posts, I encourage you to take the time to familiarize yourself with the content.

Suffice it to say the United States has rewarded laziness by providing more than just a safety net for those truly in need. Arrogance is rampant. Look at the lewd and illegal things people of power do. Do they think they won’t ever be exposed? Even our young adults are a bit crooked . . . I recently attended a graduation ceremony where the student speaker’s speech to his classmates was incredibly arrogant and self-centered.

These are just a few examples of being cock-eyed and why a plumb line is so valuable. Such a tool kept people from getting seasick in my kitchen; God’s plumb line will help save our nation from the prevailing sickness we currently suffer from.

We don’t even need non-Christians to use God’s plumb line. If Christians would use that spiritual tool to keep ourselves straight it would benefit the entire nation.

This plumb line is available to anyone who wants it. Study and heed the guidelines of the Bible. Move beyond the Christian bubble so many of us happily languish in and get out on the front lines. Reflect Jesus’ love to a hurting world. Refuse to sit idle! Get out God’s plumb line and do your best to help God make our paths straight.

Word for Today: Christians all need a plumb line from heaven.
