Word for Today – Amos 6:8

I Abhor the Pride of Jacob

OK folks, another post from Amos that probably will not leave you with the warm fuzzies, but when God speaks it is always good to pay attention.

“The Lord God has sworn to himself (says the Lord, the God of hosts): I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds” (Amos 6:8 NRSV).

When I read this section I wondered why God singled Jacob out as an example of pride. After flipping around in my Bible I found a few things that, I think, pointed me in the right direction.

One sign of pride in Jacob’s life was his resourcefulness. He obtained his brother Esau’s birthright and blessing (Gen 27). After running away from an angry Esau, he showed himself a shrewd businessman when he built a strong flock of his own after making a deal with his father-in-law, Laban (Gen 30).

Resourcefulness is a great trait, but when it causes us to rely more on ourselves than God, it becomes a hindrance in both our physical and spiritual lives.

When Jacob fled his father-in-law’s home (Gen 31) he ended up wrestling with an angel that most people believe was the Lord. For once, Jacob’s resourcefulness was no match for the competition, and he ended up with an injured hip. The prevailing line of thinking is that Jacob finally had to submit to God. That makes total sense to me.

Jacob’s resourcefulness lead to pride in himself and that became a stronghold in his spirit until it was symbolically broken during the grapple fest. I must admit I’m a bit like Jacob at times.

I don’t walk around with a haughty-type of pride, but I don’t check in with God on a regular basis like I should. That, my friends, is a form of pride. It’s a subtle way of telling God, “I don’t need you today, we’ll get together soon.” Deep inside I know I need him, but I must make more of an effort to be with him. After all, his Son, Jesus, is one of my best buddies!

I know that God hates pride and the strongholds it creates in our lives, so I want to do my best to avoid them at all costs…or at least I need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Hollow words are just that, hollow. What about you? How are you doing with pride and strongholds? Let me know if you experience the same struggles I do.

Word for Today: Take note when God says, “I abhor the pride of Jacob.”
